1968 Chevelle
In 1968 the Styling for the Chevelle was given an entire new look. Removed was the square, box look it had since its inauguration. The 68 Chevelle came with a larger, heavier appearance with its wheelbase being shortened 3 inches to 112” for the 2-door models. The 4-door sedans, station wagons, along with the El Camino were now had a 116-inch wheelbase. Even though the 1968 Chevelle was 3 inches shorter between its wheels than its 1964-67 predecessors, it remained nearly identical in length at 197 inches. This new display translated into some serious overhang up front making the lengthened 1968 hood look even longer.
All Chevelle models, excluding the 300 series, now sported hidden windshield wipers. Another new feature for 1968 was the addition of amber front side marker lights, which were made mandatory by the federal government. A new anti-theft ignition switch was located on the steering column, having been moved from the dash panel. The familiar 396 cross flags were removed, making way for the engine identification to be incorporated into the side marker light bezel. Also gone was the “Super Sport” rear quarter script.
The 1968 Chevelle and El Camino were available in 15 body colors, complimented by two-tone combinations and 3 convertible top and 2 vinyl-top color choices.
